Festival de Cerejeiras ( Cherry Blossoms ) 2015 em Washington DC

Cerejeiras, Cherry Blossoms or Sakura, no matter what name you know these little pink flowers by, know that this is the time to see them. Washington DC has one of the world’s most famous festivals, the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which has become one of the most anticipated events of the year in the city. The cherry blossoms make the city colorful in pink and white for almost a month. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite times in the city, first because the temperatures start to rise and the trees start to “come back to life” after winter, and second because there’s so much to do in the city.

I have written several posts on the blog about this subject, including a practical guide for those who want to visit the Cherry Blossoms and a Itinerary around the Tidal Basin, which I find one of the most beautiful and photogenic places in Washinton DC and during the Cherry Blossoms Festival it becomes even more special. In 2015 the festival will take place between March 20 and April 12 and just like in 2014, this year Washington DC is experiencing a very harsh winter and for now the forecast for the peak bloom of 2015 is April 11 to 14. The peak bloom is considered when at least 70% of the trees around the Tidal Basin are in bloom, but you can see cherry blossoms in bloom throughout the city in different periods of the month. These dates are an estimate and everything depends on how the temperature in March will be, the colder it is, the later it will happen. According to the National Park Service, the year when the peak bloom happened later was on April 18.

There are countless events happening in the city related to Japanese culture: Japanese art exhibitions, teas, dinners, galas. To see the full schedule, check out the calendar on the official website. March 21 – Opening Ceremony at the Warner Theatre from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Admission is free but tickets need to be booked online on January 20th, but on the day of the show there is a line for entry of those who did not get tickets to wait if there are empty seats.

April 4 – Cherry Blossom Family Celebration (one of my favorite events to take the kids to!) from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM

This is undoubtedly one of the busiest times in the city, due to the Festival and its related activities, and consequently hotels operate almost at maximum capacity.
