During a week when hotel prices in Berlin were exorbitant due to ITB, the world’s largest tourism fair taking place in the city, I found a last-minute bargain (US$65.00) on Expedia for the brand-new 4-star Pestana Tiergarten.
The hotel, opened in 2011, is located next to Tiergarten, Berlin’s largest park, and features modern architecture and decoration starting from the lobby. It offers two types of rooms: Comfort and Executive.

Check-in – I sent an email to the hotel informing that I would arrive very late and the email was promptly answered, saying there would be no problems. Check-in was quick with standard instructions. The key card activates the elevator, there is wifi in the lobby, and a computer that can be used for free. On the right side of the lobby, there is a restaurant with Portuguese delights.

The hotel has six floors and in the corridors, some phrases on the wall in Portuguese (the Pestana group is from Portugal), English, and German. I confess that I hadn’t even remembered this detail, but it’s always comforting to see some words in Portuguese after spending the day with so many German words.

The room is a great surprise. I stayed in the “Comfort” type, which is the cheapest rate. The room is very spacious and comfortable, in white and blue tones. And a personal confession: I love visiting brand-new hotels. Some details of the room: Wooden floor, desk, small sofa, and flat-screen TV. Next to the bed, the clock radio is also an iPod/iPhone station, which I find super convenient. A spacious wardrobe for clothes and a safe that can fit a laptop complete the room. My view was to the entrance street, but there are rooms with a view of the Tiergarten and suites even have a small balcony.

Bathroom: Super modern, a small bathtub, shower, and products in larger glass bottles, which I have noticed to be a new trend, especially in hotels with “green” initiatives.

WiFi: There is no WiFi in the room, only a cable connection, which despite the desk, is inconvenient. They advertise free internet, which is 128kb and if you just need to check emails, it’s fine. But if you need to work, as I did, it’s frustrating. They offer paid broadband internet. Keep in mind that the power outlets in Europe are different, so an adapter is a must-have item in your luggage.

Location: The hotel is located right next to Tiergarten, Berlin’s largest park. Berlin Zoo is a 15-minute walk from the hotel, where the nearest metro and train station are located. This area also houses the famous KaDeWe Shopping Gallery and Kurfürstendamm shopping street with some of the world’s most famous stores. Potsdamer Platz and Brandenburg Gate, two very famous tourist areas, are about 1 to 2 km away. The touristic bus stop 200 is just in front of the hotel. Taxis are very cheap in Berlin, I used them a lot, especially at night.
In the end: My impression is that the hotel caters more to the executive public. The hotel is very comfortable even for couples on leisure trips or those with only one child. With a child, there is the option of an executive room. I tried to simulate a reservation for 2 adults and 2 children, and the hotel does not accommodate that. Which is a shame, because I thought the proximity to the park and the zoo would be two main things I would like to visit with the kids. The internet issue is also a bit annoying because it’s disappointing to read that the internet is free and then arrive there and discover that the free one is the slowest and to have decent internet, you have to pay. But since I went alone and for the price I got, I loved it…and if I return to Berlin alone (which might happen due to ITB) or just with my husband, it’s the first on my list.
