Arundel is a small town about 80km from Londres, a great option for a day trip. The train journey (from Victoria station in London) takes about an hour and a half and tickets are usually reasonably priced if bought in advance (I bought them for £5 each way!) through the trainline website (which is what I always use to buy my train tickets in the United Kingdom, both for nearby places like Cambridge and for longer routes like from London to Edinburgh).
The main attraction in Arundel is the castle, which was originally built in the 11th century and has since served as the residence for the Duke of Norfolk’s family. Arundel Castle was partially destroyed during the Civil War and remodeled in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is possible to visit most of the interior spaces, but unfortunately, photography is not allowed inside, only in the gardens (which are very beautiful). But be aware of the time of year, as it closes for visits from November to March. Check the website before you go to confirm opening days and hours.

The entrance fee to Arundel Castle varies from £9 to £18 per person (adults), as there are four types of tickets and each one provides access to more or less things. The most expensive, at £18, allows you to visit even the bedrooms, while the cheapest, at £9, only gives access to the outdoor areas, chapel, shop, and restaurant. See here all the options (but you can’t buy in advance on the website, you have to buy your ticket on the spot, at the castle entrance).
Aside from the castle, Arundel is charming, but you won’t need more than 2 hours to stroll through the town’s streets. It’s impressive how many galleries and antique shops there are in such a small place! There are also several cafes and pubs that serve lunch and afternoon tea. The Cathedral is also one of the attractions, and it’s a 10-minute walk from the town center.
If you need to kill time and are willing to walk a bit, the tip is to go to Swanbourne Lake (continue on the street that leads to the castle, walk about 15 minutes along the road), a lake that even has canoes for rent! With another 20 minutes’ walk along the same road, you’ll reach The Black Rabbit pub, which is by the River Arun.
