One of the programs we did during our trip along the East Coast that ended in Las Vegas was to watch the “Blue Man Group” show. It was something we had wanted to do for a long time, and we took advantage of being just the two of us to enjoy the show, as it is not recommended for very young children.
The concept seems totally improbable: Three men dressed in black with their skin painted blue, in a one-and-a-half-hour show without saying a word. But as unlikely as it may seem, the formula was so successful that the group, which started with three friends doing shows in Central Park and alternative venues in New York, is currently performing in various cities such as Boston, New York, Chicago, Orlando, and Las Vegas, in addition to world tours.

By now, it’s practically impossible not to have heard of them. Even in Brazil, they have already done a series of shows, but in case you don’t know what it’s about, here are some places where you may have seen the three little blue men (who have no relation to the smurfs):
– TIM commercial in Brazil, mentions on TV shows like Arrested Development and Scrubs. Performances for several years on the Tonight Show, instructions on how to pass through security at the Las Vegas airport, Intel commercial.
Although they don’t say a word during or after the show, there is a strong interactive element in the show. A mix of humor, music, satire, unusual instruments; for an hour and a half, we participate, applaud, dance along, and have a lot of fun. The show, which takes place at the The Venetian hotel, starts with phrases on a sign in the audience announcing birthdays, famous people, and ordinary citizens. The sign asks the audience to help one of the people present relax because they have a headache, and everyone wishes in unison for their headache to go away. Oh, and yes, it asks not to take photos during the show (notice why there aren’t tons of photos here, right?) After about 15 minutes of the show, some latecomers arrive. The Blue Man Group stops the show and illuminates the latecomers in the audience, telling everyone that they are late. If I were you, I’d make sure to arrive on time unless you want attention and lights pointing at you and a whole theater saying that you are late. Music concerts with tubes and percussion with paint are some of the show’s most traditional moments. And in one of the sketches, with colored balls, they create “art” live that can then be purchased in the store.
Some audience members are chosen to participate in some of the sketches, and some themes like “information overload” are treated with humor. The three hold up different signs and ask you to only read the signs of one of them throughout the time, which is practically impossible because you want to read what’s on the second and third blue man’s sign. We left the show mesmerized by the spectacle of light, sound, and intelligent humor. Fascinating and very entertaining at the same time!
At the end of the show, the Blue Men make an appearance outside the theater, take photos, and give “autographs.” The autograph is nothing more than a stroke of blue paint with the finger on the fans’ preferred surface. The more prepared ones bring a white shirt where the Blue Men leave a blue handprint on the back of the shirt. Children enjoy receiving the paint on their forehead, face, or chin. For those who want to take home a souvenir, there is a shop with various group souvenirs.
One of the great advantages of the show is that you don’t need to understand English, and it is recommended for the whole family, except for very young children, because of the noise and bright lights. So if you are visiting one of the cities with Blue Man Group shows, especially in Vegas, go watch it! Guaranteed fun!
