Bilbao is a small city and very easy to explore. You can visit its main attractions in a weekend, but before you start walking around, I recommend seeing it from above, from Mount Artxanda.
To get there, use the Artxanda Funicular, which runs every 15 minutes practically all day (from 7:15 am to 10 pm on weekdays and from 8:15 am to 10 pm on weekends) and costs less than 1 euro per person each way (0.92 euros – you can’t buy a round trip ticket at once, you have to buy the one-way ticket downstairs and the return ticket when you go back down).

Up there, you can understand the city’s dynamics with the Nervión River and map out your itinerary. You can even see the airport, as well as the landings and takeoffs. The star of the view, of course, is the beautiful Guggenheim Museum.
We were lucky, as the day was beautiful and sunny. But even so, up there it can be a bit windy, so it’s advisable to bring a scarf or a very light jacket.
The ‘trip’ up there (769 meters) is super quick, taking about 3 minutes, and the funicular is quite spacious. I suggest standing up, leaning against the glass looking back, to see how the steel cables that support the ‘cars’ work.
We spent about half an hour up there, so it’s a quick trip that can be fit into any time of the day.
To ‘catch’ the funicular, you can walk along the riverbank, it’s practically midway between the Casco Viejo (old town) and the Guggenheim, at the height of the Zubizuri bridge (Plaza del Funicular, s/n).
