Nova York – Estátua da Liberdade

August 23, 2024

Visiting the Statue of Liberty in New York is certainly on the to-do list for most tourists in New York. As I plan our trip to the Big Apple, I found some information that might help those who one day plan to visit the city. For more comprehensive tips, read the comments on the post “What to do in a day in New York“.

This post is specifically about the Statue of Liberty, which is my brother’s only request. He really wants to go to the Statue. There are several options, including one that is free.

1. Free Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty

For this option, you take a Ferry to Staten Island. The 5-mile journey takes about 25 minutes, and from the deck, you can have a great view of the Statue of Liberty, take photos, and more. but you won’t be able to get off on the island where the statue is located. But in return, you do all this without paying a cent! Ferries depart every 30 minutes and during rush hours, every 15 minutes. For more information, this is the official website.

Location:

Whitehall Terminal Manhattan(South Ferry) – 4 South Street, New York, New York, 10004

Subway Station – South Ferry – Lines 1 and 9.

2. Ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

The second option is to buy a ticket that takes you to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. For this, tickets need to be purchased in advance, online on the StatueCruises website, especially if you want to climb to the top of the statue (crown). Prices vary and for more precise information, visit the site, but I will describe here some of the options and their prices as of today.

The Ferry leaves from Battery Park in New York, or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. And this is the first thing you have to choose when buying a ticket. After that, you choose the type of ticket:

a) Reserve Crown Ticket – which gives you access to the pedestal, the museum, and the top of the Statue of Liberty. And needs to be reserved well in advance. Prices: Adult – $21.00, Seniors – $17.00, and children – $12.00

b) Reserve Pedestal and Museum Ticket – which does not give you access to the top, but you can enter the Statue and see the internal structure, in addition to the museum. Costs the same price as the simple ticket but may be unavailable on the desired day because only a limited number of people can enter there, so reserve in advance. Prices: Adult – $18.00, Seniors – $14.00, and children – $9.00

c) Reserve Ticket – which does not give you access to the pedestal, museum, or top, only the external area where the Statue of Liberty is located. Gives you priority in line over people with the 3-day Flex. Prices: Adult – $18.00, Seniors – $14.00, and children – $9.00

d) 3-day Flex Ticket – is a simple ticket, but if you are not sure on exactly what day you will be able to visit the Statue of Liberty, you have 3 days to do so, starting from the scheduled initial day. This type of ticket costs the same as the simple ticket but is great for when the weather is unstable or if you are unsure exactly what time you will visit the monument. But you are also subject to availability of a place on the Ferry and is currently only sold at the Statue of Liberty ticket office in Battery Park. Prices: Adult – $18.00, Seniors – $14.00, and children – $9.00

3. City Pass

Option 3 is to buy the City Pass. It costs $112.00 for adults today and $85.00 for children and entitles you to a ticket like the Reserve Ticket for the Statue of Liberty, plus 5 more attractions: Empire State, Metropolitan Museum, Natural History Museum, Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) and you can also choose either the Top of the Rock or Guggenheim Museum.

4. New York Water Taxi

Another option is to buy tickets for the New York Water Taxi Statue of Liberty, which costs $30.00 for adults and $19.00 for children. This 60-minute tour does not allow you to disembark at the Statue of Liberty, but offers a tour of “Lower Manhattan” and the Islands of New York.

5. Finally, for those traveling to New York in the summer, there is an event that takes place at night on some days in the months of June, July, and August called “Date with Miss Liberty,” which is a visit to the Statue of Liberty, including dinner. The dates are: June 3 and 10, July 8, 15 and 22, August 5, 12 and 19. Cost is $35.00 (adults); $28.00 (seniors); $15.00 (children) and the boat departs from Battery Park at 6 p.m. I think it’s a unique program, since it doesn’t happen often and it’s even “cheap” for what it is. But they are only making 1200 tickets available per day, so it’s a good idea to buy them in advance at this link here

Important:

  • If you buy tickets to visit the top, be prepared to climb 345 steps!
  • The easiest ticket to find is the 3-day Flex, which is available for most days.
  • The hardest is the Crown, which must always be reserved well in advance.
  • The last departure for the tours is at 3:00 pm from Battery Park. Click here for more information.
  • Children only pay from the age of 4. And are considered as such up to the age of 12.

So you see that the options are varied… I haven’t decided yet which one we will do because there are no tickets to go up to the top, not even to the pedestal for the day we are going. But after we return, I will tell you. If you want to add any details that I forgot, feel free!
