Nova York: Museum of Moving Image

July 27, 2024

The Queens in New York is an area known by Brazilians for its concentration of Brazilian shops and restaurants, as well as a large number of immigrants (including Brazilians) living in the area. But what not everyone knows is that this is where the movie studios of New York are located, such as the famous Kaufman Astoria Studios, which was the production arm of Paramount Studios on the east coast of the United States. For movie enthusiasts, this is a must-visit area, and it was where I had one of the best surprises of my trip to New York.

The Museum of the Moving Image is the only museum in the United States that covers all aspects of “Moving Images,” exploring a bit of the art, history, and technology behind these images. The permanent and temporary exhibits showcase images in all their forms: video games, films, YouTube, television.

The newly renovated building is super modern and pleasant to visit. When I went, one of the installations could already be seen in the lobby.

The museum has a cinema room where films are screened daily. On special occasions, it is possible to watch a film and attend a lecture by the director or actors of the film. Martin Scorcese had been the guest the night before my visit.

There are several floors with installations by artists on topics related to moving images.

There is a very interesting area where you can get hands-on and test your skills as an animator and also do dubbing.

But probably my favorite part was where you could delve into the history of cinema and see various artifacts from famous films. Imagine coming across Yoda, Freddy Krueger, and the Gnome from Amelie on the same floor? The collection is extensive and it’s a tour through memorable films.

In the area dedicated to makeup and costumes, it was interesting to see how these areas influence the final product of movies and TV series. Some of the curious artifacts in this section are the makeup used in Sex and the City, separated by actress, the models for Chewbacca from Star Wars, and Don Johnson’s unmistakable outfit in Miami Vice.

The last section of the museum I visited had, in addition to toys inspired by TV series or movies, an area dedicated to old video games (does anyone remember Pong?).

The visit will definitely be interesting for all ages and is a unique experience for those visiting New York. And for those looking for a different souvenir from New York, the store has a collection of gifts that blend cinema, video games, and New York that will please even the most demanding.
