I took a while to join the Downton Abbey craze – I started watching from scratch just a few months ago but quickly got hooked! And luckily, most of the filming is done at the Highclere Castle, which is 100km from the center of London, making it accessible for a day trip.
The problem is, everyone seems to be addicted to Downton Abbey, so it’s not easy to get tickets. To make matters worse, they don’t open all year round – it’s only on selected days during the spring and summer, announced in advance on the Highclere Castle website. So, you have to keep an eye out: if you really want to go, check the site whenever you can, as I’ve noticed that every now and then a day that was previously ‘sold out’ becomes available or they open a new day. Another option is to buy tickets for the charity events they organize, which are also sold on the site (and don’t sell out quickly).

For those who follow the series, being there is truly exciting! As soon as you spot the building, you are ‘transported’ to the outdoor scenes of the series, and the same happens in many of the rooms inside. It’s worth noting that the kitchen, for example, is in a studio in London, so all the ‘service’ part doesn’t exist at Highclere Castle.
Unfortunately, taking photos inside the Castle is not allowed, but one of the environments used for filming is this one (careful! It may contain spoilers for those who haven’t reached season 4 yet):
The breakfast room, the library where several serious conversations take place, and some bedrooms are also immediately recognizable.
The ticket that gives access to the house and gardens (which, by the way, are beautiful!) costs £13, and for those who want to visit an exhibition with Egyptian objects that are part of the family’s collection, the price goes up to £20.
There are bathrooms and a cafeteria, but I don’t recommend eating there, they only have ready-made sandwiches. It’s best to bring food and have a picnic in the garden!
To get there: we drove there (there’s parking), but you can also take the train from London. Buy your ticket from thetrainline.com, departing from London Paddington to Newbury (NBY). At the station, take a taxi – and it’s worth arranging with the taxi driver to pick you up and take you back to the station. The train takes between an hour and an hour and a half (depending on the train, as it may stop more or less along the way), and you can buy a round trip ticket for £45 (the sooner you buy, the better!) and the taxi ride takes approximately 20 minutes.
